ENYA-meeting in Bern

Science diplomacy and academic freedom on the agenda at the annual European Network for Young Academies meeting — this year held in the beautiful Swiss capital of Bern.

The ENYA meeting is one of the highlights of the year for many young academies across Europe. This year, the Swiss Young Academy hosted the event from June 5th-6th in the grand venue of Casino Bern, with nearly 25 young academies from just as many countries in attendance. The Young Academy of Norway (AYF) was represented by Chair Guro Nore Fløgstad and General Secretary Bjørn Kristian Danbolt.

Science Diplomacy in focus

The overarching theme of this year’s meeting was Science Diplomacy, with discussions exploring its role in fostering international collaboration, contributing to evidence-informed policymaking, and addressing shared global challenges. Particular attention was given to the role of early-career researchers in shaping and advancing this emerging field.

A central event was a panel discussion featuring speakers from the International Science Council, YASAS, CERN, and the European Science Diplomacy Alliance — highlighting both the challenges and opportunities in this important arena.

Exchange of Best Practices

One of the most valuable aspects of the ENYA meeting is the opportunity to meet fellow young academies and exchange best practices and ideas. These exchanges are a great source of inspiration for our work in the Young Academy of Norway, and we look forward to following up on several of the ideas and initiatives presented.

Workshops on Key Topics

The second day of the meeting offered a range of workshops, with themes including the role of researchers in society, academic freedom, and science diplomacy. These sessions provided space for deeper reflection, discussion, and sharing of experiences across national contexts.

YASAS General Assembly

Ahead of the ENYA meeting, the General Assembly of YASAS – the Young Academies’ Science Advice Structure – was held. Several important decisions were made, including the election of a new board. Congratulations to the newly elected YASAS President, Noel de Miranda, and a heartfelt thank you to outgoing President Helen Eenmaa for her dedicated work over the past two years.

Thank you to the Swiss Young Academy for hosting two inspiring and well-organised days in Bern — and for their warm hospitality in such a beautiful setting. We look forward to the next ENYA-meeting which will be hosted by the Polish Young Academy in 2026.
